Oregon Local

January 4, 2006

NYT ran this piece on Oregon's own New Seasons Market and the trend toward local production. I love that New Seasons is leading the march toward getting people to realize that organic means one thing and local means another, and organic pears from Peru use a lot of fuel getting to Portland, for example. It will be interesting to see if New Seasons will remain small (only a few Portland stores) to retain this ethic, or if they can spread the model elsewhere, like a more envirosocially conscious Whole Foods. I'm sure Amy will agree that when New Seasons moved into her old SE haunts, the neighborhood looked a whole lot brighter. Right on, New Seasons!
